From the 9th to the 15th of Maori language week Rm 6 has been doing traditional Maori games
and here are some of the names of the games
1st Poi pukana
2nd Hei tama tu tama
3rd Poi Rakau
And here are the rules to play pukana and Hei tama tu tama and Poi Rakau
Poi Rakau Rules
1 person in the middle of the group passes out to the circle. If the person passes with their right hand, then the catcher must catch with their left hand and pass to the next person on their left, that person passes back to the middle.
Rakau Rules
If the (putahi) person passes with their right hand, then the catcher must catch with their left hand and pass to the next person on their left, that person passes back to the middle.
Hei tama tu tama Rules
You then keep challenging your opponent repeatedly while saying “tū tama” until he or she repeats your position. For example you say “tū tama” and do position 2 and your opponent responds with position 2, you call him or her out by saying “Hei tama tū tama rā” which means you are the winner.
These are great explanations Lapaix. I hope you have enjoyed learning them.
